Doel
Ghost City near Antwerp
Close to Antwerp lies a little town named 'Doel'. It was supposed to be completely demolished to make way for the Antwerp port to grow. Most of its residents moved out until the Belgian court decided to stop the demolition and so it came that this village is now still standing with most houses empty. Only a handful residents are still occupying some of the houses and the windmill is still in use as a cafetaria. Even though it lies very remotely away in between an industrial area and under the smoke (literally) of the nuclear plant, local tourists still find their way there. Not sure if the residents are always happy about that as graffiti can be found everywhere now and it isn't always the arty variety.
(update 2021)
It is said that the Belgian government has decided that Doel will be demolished no longer. This could mean that in a couple of years time this town will be completely inhabited once again.
