The 2nd largest city of The Netherlands is Rotterdam. It has the biggest port of Europe. This is a working city and the inhabitants have a "no bullshit" attitude. It is Holland's main economic area.
During WWII the city centre got fully destroyed by German bombing leading to the surrender of The Netherlands, which, until that day, was neutral in this war but the Germans thought otherwise and history was made.
The destruction of the city however lead to rebuilding it after the war to the city it is today. It is a modern city with a lot of high build and modern architecture. The river Maas runs straight through it cutting it into a northern and southern part.
The "Kop van Zuid" has a bit of a Manhatten feel. Nowadays it attracts more tourists since Lonely Planet put it in their top 10 of places you should visit. If you haven't already then I invite you to come and see if they are right.
